Our newest addition to Summer Sessions

We are back with a series of new events: Tastings on the Cam. Be prepared for an extraordinary experience, as the enchanting River Cam in Cambridge sets the stage for an unforgettable cider tasting event. For the first event (of many), in collaboration with the renowned Blue Barrel Cider, we invite you to embark on a journey of indulgence, where the harmonious blend of refreshing ciders, local cheeses and serene punting will create lasting memories. Get ready to savour the finest ciders, soak in the breathtaking scenery, and celebrate the art of cider-making in the heart of Cambridge.

Since 2018 we have hosted Music on the River in collaboration with a variety of local and up and coming artists. This year we decided to introduce a further series: ‘Tastings on the Cam’ as part of our special event sessions. The aim of Tastings on the Cam is to invite local businesses to showcase their specialities to our guests onboard, with experts taking you through a journey of taste with perfect pairings of food and drink.

These events will give our guests the opportunity to try delectable flavours, sample fine wines, explore new cocktail mixes and discover their new favourites. The best news is that Tastings on the Cam won’t just be here for summer, we are planning on making these events a year-round occurrence. So keep your eyes peeled for seasonal beers and Mulled Wine tastings in the winter months!

Our first event is being held on the 28th of July at 7:45pm with Blue Barrel Cider – a local Cider and Perry company. Their CAMRA award winning cider rethinks the zero waste movement by using surplus fruit from forgotten orchards and cider apples from their own wildlife friendly orchard in Oakington.

During this hour-long event Blue Barrel Cider will be sharing their expertise and passion for the art of cider-making and will take you behind the scenes, sharing insights on the production process and the intricacies of cider appreciation. Guests will be poured a range of ciders from both the Nottingham and Cambridgeshire orchards, from crisp and dry to sweet and fruity, their carefully curated selection promises a cider adventure that will leave you refreshed and invigorated. Savvy cider enthusiasts and newcomers alike will find something to relish in this diverse cider repertoire expertly paired with the finest local cheeses. The four ciders included within the tastings are;

Trees Are Good: Their first Oakington cider was made using late bittersweet cider apples from our orchard in Oakington. This mellow, fruity tannic cider is a perfect example of West Country style cider. This pairs well with a dry crumbly cheddar.

Bourbon Cask Cider: Matured in a bourbon whisky cask for 8 months before being bottle conditioned for a light sparkle. Made with one of the favourite cider apples amongst cider makers – the bittersharp Kingston Black, this single variety cider is a great example of a balanced cider with bags of flavour from the barrel. This pairs well with an oak aged / smoked cheese.

Perry: A bottle fermented light sparkling drink made of wild and heritage perry pears to create a delicious floral wine like perry.  In fact, Napoleon allegedly described perry as ‘English Champagne’ and we can see why! This pairs well with rind cheeses such as goats cheese / camembert

Cuckoo Returns: An Eastern Counties style cider using dessert fruit from our Oakington orchard and Fen End Farm orchard in Cottenham. Fresh, fruity and zingy, this is a new style of cider for us and reflects the local terroir & use of dessert fruit  creating a crisp fresh cider, bursting with fruity strawberry zinginess & a refreshing finish. This pairs well with blue cheese such as Cambridge Blue.

During the second half of the event, our expert punt chauffeurs will guide you back along the College Backs providing commentary about the history of Cambridge and its University all whilst sipping away on a cider of your choosing. Beyond the taste and sights, this cider tasting event offers a unique opportunity to bond with fellow cider enthusiasts. Share stories, exchange recommendations, and forge new connections in a convivial atmosphere that celebrates the love for cider and Cambridge.
