At the beginning of 2024, we faced periods of challenging weather. Persistent rains elevated river levels, occasionally disrupting our schedule. However, we remained committed to safety and customer satisfaction. On days when conditions allowed, we operated as usual, providing umbrellas and blankets to keep guests comfortable.
During the calmer days, we were delighted to offer our cherished Valentine’s Romantic Punting Packages. Couples indulged in serene cruises, enhanced by complimentary chocolates and personalised touches. Our chauffeurs went above and beyond, capturing memorable moments and accommodating special requests, including floral arrangements provided with advance notice.
Our dedication to providing exceptional experiences, even during challenging weather, was reflected in the positive feedback from our customers. For instance, a review from January 2024 highlighted the professionalism and knowledge of our chauffeurs, contributing to a memorable experience “despite the cold weather”.

Spring Punting in Cambridge: Blossoms and Educational Family Activities
As winter gave way to spring, Cambridge blossomed with vibrant flowers and lush greenery. The longer days and warmer temperatures drew residents and visitors alike to explore the city’s scenic beauty. Our chauffeurs eagerly welcomed the first warm rays of sunlight, which made the punting experience even more inviting.
In our continuous effort to enrich the traditional punting experience, we introduced an exciting addition: the Nature Activity Booklet. Building upon the success of our annual themed Punt and Hunt events, such as those during Halloween and Easter, we recognised the potential for a year-round educational guide. This guide inspires discovery and fosters a deeper engagement with the natural surroundings of the River Cam
Presenting the Nature Activity Booklet!
Launched last spring, our Nature Activity Booklet serves as an interactive companion for families, particularly children, during their punting tours. The booklet is designed to educate young minds about the river’s ecosystem. Highlighting the diverse flora and fauna that inhabit the area throughout the year. Activities such as “Spot the Wildlife” encourage children to identify and learn about common animals and plants along the riverbank, promoting an appreciation for biodiversity.
In addition to wildlife identification, the booklet includes informative fact files and suggestions for post-tour adventures, directing families to nearby parks and cultural centres that offer further opportunities for exploration and learning. A core component of the booklet is its emphasis on environmental stewardship. Through engaging content, it teaches children the importance of respecting nature and practicing eco-friendly behaviours, encapsulated in the “leave no trace” philosophy.
The introduction of the Nature Activity Booklet has been met with enthusiasm and positive feedback from our guests. Families have found it to be a valuable addition to their punting experience, providing both entertainment and education. We are proud of this initiative and its alignment with our mission to foster connections with the natural world.
Summer Punting: Milestones and Community Engagement
Summer 2024 was a season of remarkable activity and achievements for the Traditional Punting Company. On July 21st, we reached a significant milestone by operating a record 100 punts in a single day. The River Cam was alive with enthusiasm as our dedicated team worked tirelessly to provide unforgettable experiences for hundreds of guests.
Our commitment to the community was exemplified on August 16th when we collaborated with fellow punting companies to support @jimmyscambridge. This beloved organisation has been assisting the homeless in Cambridge since 1995, providing housing and trauma-informed support. To raise awareness, all punters involved wore costumes and fancy dress. Our touts engaged the public with donation buckets, creating a lighthearted and whimsical atmosphere. While our costumes caused a spectacle, the collective effort highlighted our shared goal of raising funds for Jimmy’s Cambridge.
Punting Gold Accolade
One of our proudest moments this year was the receipt of VisitEngland’s gold accolade. This prestigious award places the performance of our organisation among the top-scoring visitor attractions nationally. It is our firm belief that the attention to detail demonstrated by our brilliant chauffeurs and our dedication to traditional punting is what got us here. VisitEnglands visitor attraction quality assurance scheme (VAQAS) assesses attractions around the country, giving out additional gold awards for those attractions that are celebrated for offering outstanding visitor experiences. According to them, we are exceptional.
The summer also brought challenges, including the peak of a heatwave on August 12th, when Cambridge recorded the UK’s highest temperature of the year at 34.8°C (94.6°F). Despite the heat, our team remained resilient. Zoe Smith, Director at the Traditional Punting Company, praised the staff’s professionalism stating, “It has been busy and a valiant effort on the chauffeur’s part.” Our chauffeurs ensured that customers remained comfortable, providing umbrellas for shade and encouraging hydration throughout the tours. Their commitment to maintaining a high-quality experience, even under challenging conditions, was commendable.
In addition to our regular services, we participated in the Punting Olympics, coinciding with the Paris 2024 Olympics. This collaborative event introduced punting as a ‘competitive sport’, fostering camaraderie and showcasing the unique skills of our chauffeurs. The event added a ‘sporting spirit’ to the summer season and was well-received by attendees.
As we reflect on summer 2024, we are grateful for the milestones achieved, challenges overcome, and the community’s unwavering support. These experiences strengthen our resolve to continue offering exceptional punting tours and enriching Cambridge’s vibrant cultural tapestry.
Autumn Punting in Cambridge: Scenic Tours and Festive Traditions
As summer gave way to autumn, Cambridge transformed into a canvas of rich, warm hues. The gradual cooling of temperatures in September was accompanied by breathtaking displays of foliage. Vibrant yellows, oranges, and reds adorned the city, creating the perfect backdrop for punting tours. The sun remained spectacular and warming deep into the season, with our November photography capturing moments that could easily be mistaken for a late spring day—if not for the golden leaves framing the riverbanks.
Embracing the charm of autumn, we let our creativity shine. Our team carved gourds and captured scenic videos of cascading leaves to entice customers into an autumnal wonderland. The Boston ivy at St John’s College turned a striking crimson, drawing admiration as we navigated passengers along the picturesque waterways speckled with fallen leaves.
As the trees shed their foliage and the season transitioned into winter, we adapted to the colder weather. Our chauffeurs braved the chill, equipped with gloves, heated gilets, and a warm smile to ensure comfort and enjoyment for all guests. Winter punting remained a cornerstone of our service, offering the same promise of exploration, luxury, and bonding through shared experiences, even in colder conditions.
A Festive Highlight: Christmas Carols on the River
December brought the return of one of our most beloved traditions, Christmas carols on the river. This year’s event was a resounding success, capturing the festive spirit of Cambridge and the hearts of all who attended. The Choir of St John the Evangelist graced us with their resonant voices, filling the air with cherished carols. Their harmonious melodies echoed along the river, creating an atmosphere of joy and community.
The event was documented on our YouTube channel, allowing those who couldn’t attend to experience the magic. We were delighted to raise £1,420 for the Cambridgeshire Community Foundation. This remarkable charity has been championing causes and supporting the voiceless in our county for over two decades. Every ticket purchased contributed to their invaluable work, emphasising the community’s generosity during the holiday season.
