Punting in Cambridge is a unique tourist activity that brings thousands of people to the historic city of Cambridge to sightsee some of the most iconic and renown buildings in the UK. Punting takes you along the Cambridge river, called the Cam, on a 2 mile journey through the University campus. Passing by colleges, libraries, chapels, listed buildings and under famous bridges, it is clear to see why punting is so popular. You get to see the delights of Cambridge during a relaxing tour on the water. What’s more, you have a chauffeur (‘punter’) at the helm guiding you along the calms waters and regaling you with everything there is to know about the sights, Cambridge and it’s University. It’s a fantastic way to learn about this historic city and takes you to sights that are either not accessible to the public or by foot.
Even though punting is an all year round activity, it is obviously more popular in the summer months. Since punting is done outdoors, the weather plays a big part. So the brighter and warmer the better. Therefore, our peak season is from June to September. Summer Punting is a really big thing in Cambridge and is consider the number one pastime. Anyone that has not experienced being on a punt, should really give it a go!
The River Cam in Summer is bustling with punts, both chauffeured and self-hire. From morning till night the College Backs are filled with people on wooden vessels enjoying the beautiful architecture that surrounds. Each summer brings with it knew scenes to behold, when the college gardens bloom with flowers and the newest generation of swans and ducks that always like to paddle alongside the boats.
Traditional Summer Punting
Even though summer is a busy season for our industry we, the Traditional Punting Company, always like to include additional activities for all to enjoy. Summer is the time of the year when festivals take place around the city, BBQs are sparked up on the parks and fun outdoors gatherings can be witnessed all over Cambridge. To provide diverse and unique experiences we organise a few extra events on the River such as: Music on the River, privilege seats to the May Ball Fireworks, unique Hen Parties and dusk romantic punting tours for two. There are also a host of events that take place on our wonderful river that we try to promote and be a part of it, like the cardboard box race as well as putting on lots of staff do gatherings to build our team spirit.
Take a look at our memories of summer’s punting along the River Cam…
Of course this summer will be slightly different due to the unfortunate pandemic we all face. But as we are an outdoor activity, we hope to welcome you onboard soon to enjoy the perks of this amazing sunny season with your family. Stay safe and we will meet again soon.
